About the speaker:
Samuel Chao Chung Ting is a well-known American physicist. He was born on January 27, 1936, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His parents were from Rizhao County, Shandong Province, China. In 1956, Ting was invited to attend the University of Michigan. In 1959, he was awarded BAs in both mathematics and physics, and in 1962, he earned a doctorate in physics. Since 1969, he has been a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1977, he was named MIT’s first Thomas Dudey Cabot Institute Professor. Since 1982, he has worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
He has won a lot of prizes around the world, such as the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1976, the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award in 1976, and the Eringen Medal of the American Society of Engineering Science in 1977. He is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a foreign academician of Academia Sinica.

Professor Ting is a prestigious physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the J/ψ meson nuclear particle. In recent years, he attracted the whole world’s attention again for his experiment of using the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to explore anti-materials.
